In addition to evening dance classes (to be posted soon), North Carolina Dance Institute offers a variety of summer performance workshops, intensives, and dance camps for children and teens of all levels. Registration began March 1, and payment is now due at the time of registration. Camp costs are shown for each camp, and the annual NCDI registration fee may apply. Refunds can be issued up to 2 weeks prior to the start of any camp, workshop, or intensive. Please fill out a Summer Registration Form and submit payment when registering. Our summer camps fill quickly - register early to reserve your spot!

Summer Showcase Intensive
Dance and Perform This Summer!

2004 Summer Dance Explosion bows

The Summer Showcase Intensive is a two-week intensive summer dance camp that culminates in a live theatrical dance production. It is a smaller version of the Summer Dance Explosion. The Summer Showcase Intensive will include two original ballets and a montage of several Fosse pieces. NCDI staff including Kirstie and Caroline, and guest choreographer Grady Bowman, will lead the Intensive. It is a great performance opportunity for NCDI dancers and other dancers in our community. See photos from the 2004 Summer Dance Explosion. Acceptance is by audition only. Open auditions were Sunday, March 13, and Sunday, May 15. Students may still be accepted by private audition. Dance Auditions Sunday, March 13, and Sunday, May 15
5:00pm-6:00pm for dancers 9-12 yrs , 6:00pm-7:00pm for dancers 13-17 yrs
Acceptance is by audition only. Dancers should be at an intermediate level of training and presently taking ballet. This audition is not for beginner dancers. Ballet training is required. Bring proper dance attire, leotard, tights, or jazz pants with ballet slippers and jazz shoes. Hair should be worn up or in a bun preferably. Please arrive promptly for audition.

Summer Ballet Intensives

Ballet Summer Ballet Intensives are very popular at NCDI. The Classical Ballet Intensive with Max Baud is a concentrated program of three-hour technique classes. The Children’s Ballet Intensive will inspire the young dancer, and it culminates in a performance showcase for the parents at NCDI. Ballet Basics provides a great introduction or review of ballet fundamentals. Required attire includes leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers. Hair should be worn in a bun. NCDI encourages all students who wish to be in higher placement classes for the fall semester to participate in a ballet intensive. Ballet intensives are for the beginner to the serious minded ballet student and strive to develop the complete dancer.

Classical Ballet Intensive with Carolina Ballet’s Max Baud
The Classical Ballet Intensive is for the serious ballet student. One week of ballet fundamentals and exciting combinations fill this high-energy intensive. Max Baud, NCDI instructor and Carolina Ballet dancer, leads the intensive. Students should come prepared for a packed three hours of barre work, centre work and choreography. Please bring a healthy snack. Classical ballet attire is required (black leotard and pink tights), with hair worn in a bun.

Children's Ballet Intensive
This fun ballet camp for children 5 to 8 yrs will cover ballet fundamentals and stagecraft exploration with stage make-up for children and costumes. Creative choreography based on a theme will be presented in a showcase for parents at NCDI. The performance will be held on Friday at 11:30am. Any color leotard, pink tights and pink ballet slippers are required. Skirts are permitted. Please provide a mid-morning snack for your child.

Ballet Basics Intensive I
The Ballet Basics Intensive is a fun introduction to ballet basics in this one-week camp for students 8-11 yrs. This camp is perfect for the beginner who wants to learn ballet fundamentals and explore the wonderful world of ballet. An exploration of stage make-up and creating ballerina buns will be covered during this fun and fast paced intensive.

Ballet Basics Intensive II
The Ballet Basics Intensive II is a fast-paced review of ballet fundamentals and proper body placement. Students will explore dance combinations that travel through space and learn choreography. This camp is designed for the student who has some knowledge of ballet fundamentals and wants to further their knowledge in a fast-paced week of study.

Pre-Pointe Primer

Pointe Get your feet ready for the fall semester! Our Pre-Pointe Primer takes the new pointe student through all the steps needed for starting pointe. A one-hour ballet class warms the body, and it is followed by a 45-minute barre only (on pointe) session. Pointe shoes are required and should be fitted properly and sewn before the Pre-Pointe Primer begins. Contact NCDI 2 weeks prior to camp with inquiries about pointe shoes.

Choreography Workshop
Contemporary Modern

Maggie's jump Learn new and exciting choreography and modern techniques in this fast-paced workshop with Ashley Lindsey from the North Carolina School of the Arts and NCDI modern instructors, Angella Foster and Willie Hinton. Ashley brings a wealth of exciting choreography from his studies at the prestigious North Carolina School of the Arts and will cover current trends in modern techniques. Intense morning technique classes and choreography sessions culminate in a performance showcase at NCDI. Only 25 students will be accepted for this intensive workshop.

Kids and Teens Hip-Hop Camps

Hip-Hop The coolest camp for your kid this summer! Learn the hot moves seen on TV and videos. NCDI hip-hop instructors Dywon and James lead these fun and funky camps. Due to popular demand, the intermediate Teens Hip-Hop Camp is held in the evenings.

Rock-ette Boot Camp

Masters of Tap Do you have what it takes to be a Rockette? The Rock-ette Boot Camp is designed to give the serious dancer an inside look at what it takes to be a Rockette. Learn intense tap routines and high-energy jazz dances with Ligon Arts Tapestry Ensemble Director and choreographer, Freddie-Lee Heath. Freddie-Lee will re-create Rockette style choreography with Broadway and rhythm tap sequences in this fast-paced one-week Rock-ette Boot Camp.

PlayDance Creative Arts Camps

PlayDance North Carolina Dance Institute offers an imaginative and creative PlayDance Arts Camp for 3-5 yrs. Children will dance along with their favorite fairy tales and create dance-related artistic crafts. Each fun-filled day will consist of a 45-minute dance class, a creative reading snack break, and followed by the completion of their very own craft. All craft materials, costumes and snacks are supplied by NCDI. Pink leotards, skirts and leather ballet slippers are required for PlayDance Creative Arts Camp. Tights are not required during the summer months. This is an inspiring summer camp experience for the budding young artist who loves to dance! Only 10 students permitted.

Summer Dance Camps

Summer Dance Camp NCDI Summer Dance Camp is a fun dance camp designed for the beginner level or minimal experienced student with a full week of jazz, ballet, and hip-hop basics. Students explore different dance styles, learn dance terminology and of course, dance to upbeat music. Popular current dance styles make this dance camp fast-paced and fun.

Summer Dance Camp Stay in dance shape this summer! Kirstie will lead two three-day dance workshops including ballet barre and centre technique followed by new jazz choreography.
